This bronze statue shows the Buddha standing calmly, his right hand raised in abhaya mudra - a gesture that offers protection and reassurance - and his left hand held forward in varada mudra, symbolizing compassion and giving. He gently holds the edge of his monastic robe (sanghati), which drapes smoothly over both shoulders and clings to the body in flowing, symmetrical lines.​ Made most likely in the Pāla period, when Nalanda was a major Buddhist learning and art center, this sculpture reflects a style that blended spiritual expression with skilled craftsmanship.
