This elaborate carved Torana is the eastern gateway of the Great Stupa at Sanchi—the oldest stone stupa still standing in India and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Emperor Ashoka built this stupa in the 3rd century BCE. Later, during the Shunga period, four intricately carved ceremonial gateways were added in the four directions. The eastern gateway probably was the first one to be created, and it didn't just work as an entrance. It also acted as visual scripture in stone.
